Adaptations
Choose 2 adaptations when you select your race. These genetic expressions manifest at level 1 when you reach maturity.
Combat Adaptations
Scorpion
+1 to attacks at night and in darkness. Poisons you craft deal an extra die of damage at night (or +2 poison damage if no die).
Eagle
+1 to attacks in daytime. Day lasts 18 hours, night lasts 6 hours in the desert.
Insectoid
Advantage on bug-related checks, and +1 AC from carapace-like skin covering.
Survival Adaptations
Vulture
Eating carrion during a rest (1 hour minimum) heals 2d4+2 HP instead of making you sick.
Camel
+2 to water-related survival checks, and can go +2 additional days without water beyond racial limits.
Sandworm
Sandy terrain is not difficult terrain for you. Advantage on sandworm-related checks.
Sensory Adaptations
Mongoose
Darkvision extends +30 feet beyond normal range. Can be chosen twice for +60 feet total.
Keen Hearing
Advantage on hearing-based checks and +5 to passive Perception for sounds.
Keen Sight
Advantage on vision-based checks and +5 to passive Perception for visual details.
Keen Taste and Smell
Advantage on scent-based checks. Can detect if food or drink is toxic by spending an action to smell it (except for Iocane powder).
Keen Touch
Always find hidden traps and mechanisms if you take time to search the object. +2 to disarm traps and pick locks.
Special Adaptations
Psionic
You can train Psionic feats. Without this adaptation, psionic abilities are impossible to learn.
Ore-Born
You can touch and wield raw metal used for the most powerful magic items. Without this adaptation, contact with such materials causes madness or worse.
Octarine Blood
Roll corruption with advantage when learning Mercurial spells. Drinking wine grants inspiration once per day.
Water Sense
Your chance of finding water in barren areas becomes 5% instead of 1% (roll 1 on d20 instead of d100). Can sense when water elementals and Marid are in the area (but not exact location).
Choosing Adaptations
Consider your character's background and intended role. Combat characters might choose Scorpion or Eagle, while explorers benefit from sensory adaptations. Psionic and Ore-Born open unique character paths but require specific builds.
Adaptation Combinations
Some powerful combinations include:
- Mongoose + Keen Sight: Excellent night scout
- Camel + Water Sense: Ultimate desert survivor
- Psionic + Octarine Blood: Safer magical development
- Scorpion + Insectoid: Deadly night warrior
- Keen Touch + Ore-Born: Master treasure hunter
Adaptation Limits
You can only choose each adaptation once, except Mongoose which can be taken twice. Choose carefully - these represent permanent genetic changes that define your character's capabilities.
Roleplay Considerations
Adaptations should influence how you describe your character:
- Physical changes: Carapace skin, enhanced senses, unusual blood
- Behavioral traits: Night activity, dietary preferences, sensory focus
- Social implications: How do others react to your adaptations?
- Cultural significance: Some clans favor certain adaptations
